National Assisted Living Week

Celebrating National Assisted Living Week® Sept. 10-16

A weeklong celebration kicks off Sunday, September 10th, and Assisted Living Locators is joining tens of thousands of assisted living communities across the country for the festivities. It’s National Assisted Living Week® through Saturday, September 16th.

Established by the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) in 1995, National Assisted Living Week® provides a unique opportunity for residents, their loved ones, staff, volunteers, and the surrounding communities to recognize the role of assisted living in caring for America’s seniors and individuals with disabilities. The NCAL website states there are 30,200 assisted living communities with 1 million licensed beds in the United States today.

Finding the right assisted living community for you or your loved one isn’t easy. And it shouldn’t be. This is a new and important chapter in a senior’s life. It’s a process that can be made easier with some professional guidance.

In celebration of National Assisted Living Week, Assisted Living Locators, a no cost referral and housing placement service for seniors and their families, is providing some tips to help you through this often stressful time.  We have been helping families evaluate senior care choices for well over a decade nationwide.  We are locally owned and operated, and we are based out of Venice.  Our goal is to help you most efficiently navigate the seemingly endless choices in senior care and resources.

Choosing an assisted living community is an important decision that involves more than simply choosing a floor plan or admiring a chandelier or decor.  You want to ensure that there is a continuum of care in place to meet your loved one’s needs if and when they change.  Assisted living facilities offer the safety and security of 24-hour support and access to care. Day or night, help is only a phone call away. However, privacy and independence are encouraged. A good facility will develop a personalized plan that meets your senior’s needs and accommodates their disabilities, while giving them the freedom to do what they can for themselves.

Make sure the community feels home-like.  Are there grab bars in the bathroom? Is there a separate thermostat in your room? Is there plenty of natural lighting? What is the view like? Is there enough closet and storage space? Are kitchen cabinets easy to reach?  Do they offer activities that interest your loved one, such as a library, chapel, recreation center or transportation to off-site amenities?

Itis also imperative to make sure the facility is in compliance with state and local licensing requirements. In the U.S., each state has different standards. We recommend finding a professional to help you through this often overwhelming process, to provide expert advice on senior housing and care.  The Senior Care Advisors at Assisted Living Locators work with families to find assisted living communities with top amenities, progressive healthcare and optimal wellness programs.

Assisted Living Locators offers a full assessment of your loved one’s needs and recommends a plan that provides the full continuum of care.  Our free community-oriented service allows you the freedom to access the best resources available. We take the time to ensure information is fully vetted and the most appropriate housing or care option is selected for your loved one.  We are also a resource for short-term respite care, emergency discharges and out-of-town relocations.
