Boston native and retired middle school math teacher Janis Guiney dedicated her professional career to enriching and expanding young minds in one of the most notoriously complex subjects. For more than 30 years, she diligently provided guidance and leadership to students before retiring in 2008 to transition full-time into volunteerism and philanthropy.
Throughout her long and respected career, Janis repeatedly has garnered accolades from students, colleagues and organizations alike for her innate ability to enhance the quality of life for all those within her sphere of influence. She consistently acts with a caring and selfless approach to ensure the well-being of others. Now, Janis brings her attentive and altruistic perspective to her new Family Liaison position at Assisted Living Locators Manasota.
Prior to her move to Florida and arrival at Assisted Living Locators, Janis spent eight years working with non-profits in various capacities. During this time, the majority of her volunteerism was with the Bourne Council on Aging (BCOA), where she was awarded Volunteer of the Year in 2013. The BCOA is charged with planning, developing, implementing and providing programs and services to support seniors, as well as promoting healthy living to local residents of any age. One highlight of her tenure at the BCOA was managing the My Senior Center program— a valuable skill-set she now puts to work for the families of Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte and Lee Counties as they research and choose the very best senior care for themselves or their loved ones.
Never one to rest on her laurels, Janis’ additional volunteer service since 2008 includes BCOA children’s and senior programs such as Bridging the Years, Toys for Tots, food pantry and the annual pumpkin patch fundraiser. She also repeatedly has volunteered her time for Wreaths Across America at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as the Juvenile Diabetes Research, Cure for Cancer and Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights Drum and Bugle Corp golf tournaments. The Golden Knights Drum and Bugle Corp is a non-profit raising funds for college scholarships. Janis has been a member of various drum corps since 1959, and she still marches regularly today.
Janis holds a Master of Education in Mathematics Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics. Her teaching experience, combined with her extensive volunteer work with seniors in a variety of capacities, gives Janis a valuable advantage when seeking the best solution for senior care and services. She is looking forward to applying her knowledge of education philosophy and love of volunteerism to her new role as the Assisted Living Locators Family Liaison.
